What is scaffolders insurance?
Working as a scaffolder, you face very specific risks which mean that the priorities are Employers Liability insurance (a legal requirement, even if you only use casual labourers) and public liability (likely to be a contractual requirement in many situations).
The construction industry remains one of the most dangerous sectors to work in, despite significant improvements in health and safety over recent years. But working as a scaffolder – at height – presents some unique risks that you must have protection against.
A scaffolders insurance policy will ensure you have adequate protection in place for these specific risks, while also offering you options to cover other, more standard tradesman concerns, such as your van and tools.
What can be included on a scaffolders insurance policy?
The main covers relate to liabilities – public and employers. While employers liability cover is a legal requirement, it’s worth checking with a broker what level of indemnity (the maximum that a policy will pay out in the event of a successful claim) is suitable. Scaffolding work is high risk and the likelihood is that a claim could soon mount up to a significant amount where serious injury or loss is proven.
Your insurance cover will need to stipulate specific cover for working at height. A ‘standard’ cover will usually protect you where you and your team are working at upto 15m above ground, but it can be extended where that isn’t sufficient. It is worth discussing this carefully, because if an accident were to happen at a height exceeding what’s stipulated on your policy, you’d effectively have no cover in place whatsoever.
Beyond those critical liability covers, you may also wish to insure your specialist tools and equipment. Scaffolding poles and boards – which will often be left on site overnight – can be attractive to thieves.
Other types of insurance for scaffolders
A policy can be arranged that also includes cover for your other business assets that you’re likely to need as a tradesman. Covers that can be included:
- Van or truck insurance
- Cover for your commercial premises where you work from a yard
- Business contents cover
- Tools and equipment cover – owned and hired it
